Wowser! 12rec. recording artists Plaistow won the annual ZKB Jazzpreis for young Swiss Jazz musicians. The band was praised for their precision, dynamics and will to offend common listening habits in Jazz. According to Johann Bourquenez, Plaistow will invest the cash price (about 6.500€) in the production of a DVD and a new album, due some later in Fall 2009. 12rec. is impressed and reminds you to check the latest Plaistow EP “Do You Feel Lucky?„ right away.

Plaistow wagt und gewinnt (Zürich, 6. Juni 2009)

Im Jazzclub Moods boten gestern drei junge Schweizer Bands einen begeisternden Auftritt auf sehr hohem Niveau. Den siebten ZKB-Jazzpreis verlieh die Jury schliesslich dem Genfer Trio Plaistow, das durch seinen Mut zur Sperrigkeit, seine Dynamik und absolute Präzision überzeugte.
Zum siebten Mal ging am 5. Juni 09 das Finale des ZKB Jazzpreises über die Bühne des Moods. Die Finalisten Plaistow, Sha's Banryu und flyOut sind drei ganz unterschiedliche Bands, von denen jede durch ihr Konzept und ihren Auftritt das Publikum in ihren Bann zog. Nach den drei Final-Beiträgen zog sich die Jury - Bobby Keller, Annelise Wetter, Hans-Peter Künzle, Co Streiff, Michael Zollinger - zurück, um ihren Entscheid zu fällen.
Anschliessend trat Jurymitglied Bobby Keller auf die Bühne und teilte den Entscheid mit:
Sieger des ZKB Jazzpreises 09 ist die Genfer Band Plaistow. Mit ihrem Mut zum eigenständigen Sound, ihrer Präzision und ihrer Dynamik hat sie die Jury am stärksten überzeugt. Der zweite Rang ging an Sha's Banryu und der dritte Rang an Urs Vögelis flyOut, die beide ebenfalls eine herausragende Leistung geboten hatten.

Jurymitglied Bobby Keller sagte über die Siegerband Plaistow:
“Das Trio besticht durch ein grosses Wagnis in der Improvisation, die Intensität und ein überzeugendes Band-Feeling vom ersten Takt an. Die Musiker von Plaistow haben den Mut, einen ganz eigenen Weg zu beschreiten und ihren ureigenen Bandsound zu entwickeln. Die Dynamik, der Spannungsbogen auf sehr hohen Niveau und darüber hinaus absolute Präzision. Toll, was diese Band sich erarbeitet hat.„

Peter Luginbühl, Vertreter der ZKB, überreichte den Musikern von Plaistow den mit 10'000 CHF dotierten Preis. Die Band wird zudem am diesjährigen jazznojazz-Festival (28.-31.10.09) auftreten.

Seit der Saison 02/03 führen die Partner ZKB und Moods jährlich den ZKB-Jazzpreis durch. Das Ziel, den Nachwuchs der Schweizer Jazzszene zu fördern, soll nicht nur durch die Preisvergabe erreicht werden, sondern auch durch die über die ganze Saison verteilten Konzerte. Die teil- nehmenden Formationen präsentieren eine breite Palette verschiedener Stilrichtungen des Jazz.

Plaistow ose et gagne (Zürich le 6 juin 2009)

Trois jeunes groupes Suisses ont convaincu hier au Jazzclub Moods avec des performances enthousiasmantes et de très haut niveau. Le jury s'est finalement décidé à donner le septième ZKB-Jazzpreis au trio genevois Plaistow, qui a su convaincre grâce à son parti pris pour la non-conformité, sa dynamique et sa précision.
Pour la septième fois, la Finale du ZKB Jazzpreis à eu lieu au Moods le 5 juin 2009. Les finalistes Plaistow, Sha's Banryu et flyOut, trois groupes très différents, ont su chacun captiver le public avec leur concept et leur performance. Après cette Finale en trois parties, le Jury - Bobby Keller, Annelise Wetter, Hans-Peter Künzle, Co Streiff, Michael Zollinger - a délibéré et pris sa décision.

C'est le membre du Jury Bobby Keller qui a annoncé la décision: Le lauréat du ZKB Jazzpreis 09 est le groupe genevois Plaistow. Avec leur courage de défendre un son original, leur précision et leur dynamique ils ont réussi à convaincre le Jury. La deuxième place fut obtenue par Sha's Banryu et la troisième par Urs Vögelis flyOut. Les deux groupes ont également donné un concert exceptionnel.

Boby Keller, membre du Jury, disait du vainqueur Plaistow:
“Le trio convainc par sa grande prise de risque dans l'improvisation, l'intensité et une émotion de groupe dès la première mesure. Les musiciens de Plaistow ont le courage de tracer leur propre chemin et de développer un son original qui leur est propre. La dynamique, la tension qui traverse le concert entier à très haut niveau, et de surcroît la précision absolue; fabuleux ce que ce groupe a réussi a créé.„

Peter Luginbühl de la Banque Cantonale Zurichoise transmettait aux musiciens de Plaistow le premier prix de 10'000 CHF. Le groupe jouera également au Festival jazznojazz (28.-31.10.09).

Depuis la saison 2002/03 les partenaires ZKB et Moods organisent annuellement le ZKB-Jazzpreis. L'objectif de soutenir la scène émergente du Jazz Suisse, est poursuivi non pas uniquement par le prix lui-même mais par une saison de concert au Moods. Les participants présentent un large panorama des différents style de Jazz.

Critically acclaimed Geneva Jazztrio Plaistow hooked up with Moroccan MC Mobydick to form a new band: Mobystow.
Mobydick spits in French and Darija language (which is an Arabian idiom). That sounds fresh and interesting, and his associative, spoken word-style flow is unique. Plaistow add their visions of high energy Post-Bop to make this EP something new and outstanding. Chapeau!

"Plaistow have the traditional jazz formation of piano-bass-drums and given their name is derived from a Squarepusher track, Plaistow Flex Out, due anticipation of avant gardist jazz is justified. The sound and language of Plaistow reflect developments in the free and improvised jazz vocabularies; the rigorous discipline shown in expression is not paradoxical to the idea freedom but indeed reinforces their dynamic approach.
Do You Feel Lucky? , released on German netlabel 12rec, starts with a track entitled Steve Reich, could be seen as a homage, in a sense Plaistow adopt minimalist approaches to the jazz tradition. There are cycles of movements, reinforced motifs, built and repeated melody and rhythm, sometimes quite at others a deluage of noise and intensity. Aki’s Apple is while not the most dynamic track, if that is to mean energy and intensity shown, it has phrasing and a quiet simplicity that has a simpatico with this reviewers ears. Yap Yap ends the album most evidently in it’s genre overlapping of rock and jazz styles engaging in vibrant and convulsive interwoven structure."

Starting with a salute to minimalist Steve Reich, the composition starts as a Reich-influenced piece then uses the keyboard as the pace setter while the drummer and bassist erupts with sounds that I’m not even sure how they managed to create. “Crash” is a theme played repeatedly and just when you are started to get irritated with it goes off into a improvisatory pyrotechnics display. “Aki’s Apple” is a delightful solo piano vehicle while the last track “Yap-Yap” brings the trio back for what may be the best effort on the album. All the tunes are originals which only strengthen the fact that this is a first rate jazz ensemble and a first rate album."

Free Album Galore - 24 jan 2008
(...) Plastow’s online album Los Criminales Reciclados En Conductores De Autobuses keeps at least one foot in modern jazz. The trio, led by pianist Johann Boruquenez, reminds me a bit of McCoy Tyner’s more exploratory works especially in the fast and exciting opening track, “Yap-Yap”. The title track is also quite complex and a little more “out” there. Drummer Cyril Bondi lays a good strong beat but is also capable of providing color when necessary. Bassist Raphaël Ortis has a sensitive touch that is best on the quieter numbers like “Stase Psychique” and the hypnotic “Mairie Des Lilas”. Those who like good jazz and improvisatory music should consider this a must-have.

Das Netlabel Insubordinations hat mit Los Criminales Reciclados En Conductores De Autobuses ein wirklich brillantes Post-Jazz-Release veröffentlicht. Besonders gefangen genommen hat mich die subtil elektrisierende Nummer Mairie Des Lilas. Einfach gigantisch gut. Eine musikalisch präzisere Beschreibung der einzelnen Tracks kann man dem Review auf What’s hot today (RUBored) entnehmen. Dort wird Mairie Des Lilas gar als Offenbarung gefeiert. (...)

Not So Relevant (Carsten Pötter)
In the untiring quest for quality netaudio releases here at NSR I have come across this nice little gem of quality jazz. (...) The release consists of four tracks. While the first track is pretty fast and straight forward, the second one -Mairie Des Lilas - is a smooth, sometimes almost silent piano driven track. On the third track we see this trio’s musical quality, covering a wider spectrum than jazz, being more folky and including a drum solo near the end which is more reminiscent of rock drummers. The last track is very smooth once again and finishes a highly recommended release. (...)

Segunda referencia en cdr y libre descarga del sello de “d’incise” dedicado a las improvisaciones de todo tipo, insubordinations. Me lo he bajado sin saber que era, solo porque el titulo me ha hecho gracia y me he llevado una buenísima sorpresa al escucharlo. Un trabajo de un trio de jazz con muy buen gusto y enfoque para su música. Como ya os comento, a parte de la descarga se puede adquirir una de las cincuenta copias exclusivas de este trabajo a través de la web.
Muy recomendado!

Plaistow est un groupe de jazz libre. Cette liberté permet ici d'intégrer tout autant les influences du post-rock que du jazz plus classique. Cette double identité est présente dans les morceaux Mairie des Lilas et Los Criminales.... C'est dans ce style que le groupe excelle : sur une rythmique impeccable, le piano déroule progressivement son thème comme une texture, basée sur la répétition et les salves atonales. (...)
